Biography:

Don Victor Lay arrived in Sonora and stayed in Hermosillo, where he planted the seeds of Latin music in the city and was featured in the documentary ‘Buena Vista Social Club’

Victor Lay Zerquera is a Cuban composer and musician who brought prestige to his hometown of Cienfuegos , where he was born on March 3, 1923, and who died on July 30, 2001 in Hermosillo, Sonora , the land where he spent the last years of his life and where he resumed that profession that he loved so much and that he had already left aside: music.

With a song he called “Cienfuegos has its guaguancó,” Victor Lay went down in history without intending to, since that song, which he composed in 1949, was chosen to be part of the official soundtrack of the famous documentary “Buena Vista Social Club” from 1996, which was recorded in Cuba and directed by Wim Wenders, from which the homonymous album of the following year, led by the musician Ry Cooder, was released .

At that time, Don Victor Lay was already living in Sonora , and in his country, nobody had heard from him; they believed he was dead. That is why they decided to take his emblematic song and include it in that production . Later, he had to raise his hand, and after a legal process, he received the corresponding royalties that allowed him to live his last years in a better way.
