Biography:

Martín Carrizo ( Buenos Aires , January 3, 1972 – San Isidro , Buenos Aires , January 11, 2022) 1 was an Argentine drummer , sound engineer and producer . He performed with artists such as ANIMAL , Walter Giardino Temple , Gustavo Cerati , Pr3ssion and Indio Solari .

Musical career

He is considered one of the best drummers his country has produced in the last twenty years.

He was the drummer for ANIMAL between 1994 and 1997, recording the albums Fin de un mundo dolor and El Nuevo Camino del Hombre . With ANIMAL he toured almost all of Argentina, South America , part of Central America and some cities in the United States, performing more than 400 recitals.

In 1997 he participated in the Zildjian Day event in Argentina, organized by the Zildjian cymbal brand , which consisted of a world tour with the two “best drummers in the world” and two representatives of the country where it took place. Here Martín Carrizo shared the stage with Simon Phillips and Dennis Chambers . He also taught classes between 1995 and 1998 and gave drum clinics explaining his technique and promoting the brands Mapex , Remo , Zildjian, Nord Lead and Ddrum throughout the country. 2

In October 1997, Carrizo left ANIMAL for personal reasons. A few months later, Walter Giardino , guitarist of Rata Blanca , summoned him to be the drummer for his solo project, called Walter Giardino Temple, recording the only album that this project had. Together with Giardino he filled two Maipo theaters , an Obras Stadium (sharing these shows with the band Deep Purple ) and a World Cup stadium in Mar del Plata (also sharing the stage with Deep Purple).

Gustavo Cerati immediately summoned him to be his drummer for the recording of the album Bocanada , and to go on his first tour outside of Soda Stereo . They performed seventy shows throughout South America, Central America and several cities in the United States. 3

In 2001 he recorded the album PR3SSiON , composed and produced by himself. In 2003 he met Andrés Giménez again and decided to return to ANIMAL, not only as a drummer and composer – as in the band’s previous albums – but also as an arranger, recording technical producer and mixing technician. The album was created entirely at MC Producciones, Martín Carrizo’s own home studio. This album, called Combativo , showed a quite renewed sound and was released by Universal México and distributed almost all over the world. With this album he did several shows in Argentina, all of Mexico and a show at Rock al Parque (in Colombia ). At the end of 2005 the band permanently dissolved. 4

In 2006 Carrizo was nominated as the best drummer of the last twenty years of rock in Argentina , an award given by Rock&Pop for the Rock&Pop Awards. Together with Christian ‘Titi’ Lapolla, he formed the band Power of Soul with which they recorded an album. In 2007 he was summoned by Indio Solari (former leader of Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota ) as a sound engineer to make his solo album Porco Rex and play several of the drums that sound on it. In 2008, Indio Solari invited Carrizo to play the last 5 songs in the two closing recitals of his tour at the La Plata stadium. From that moment on, El Indio incorporated him into his band, in addition to being his recording engineer. In 2010, again with Indio Solari, he participated in their third album, El perfume de la tempestad , as drummer and engineer. In 2013 he participated in their fourth album De él Pajaritos, bravos Muchachitos , as drummer and engineer. 5

Starting in 2010, Carrizo played live with Indio Solari and the Fundamentalists of Air Conditioning in the massive shows performed by this legendary Argentine artist. In 2016 Carrizo remained the sole drummer for Indio Solari and Los Fundamentalistas del Aire Aconditionado, also taking on the role of drum programmer and musical director of the live band. 6

In 2017 it was announced that he was not going to be part of the show that Indio Solari would give in Olavarría (at least not on stage) due to “an illness that prevented him from playing”, and a few months later he announced that he suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis . 7

Personal life and death

He was the brother of the child host, actress and singer Cecilia “Caramelito” Carrizo and participated with her in the program, in the composition and production of the vast majority of her songs.

In 2016 he was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), which is why he had to step away from the stage to begin an intense fight against the disease. After a long battle, he died in the early hours of January 11, 2022.
