Life before fame

Born in São Paulo , the son of lawyers, at nine months old he went with his family to Rio de Janeiro , where they lived for three years. After this period, they moved to Brasília , [ 6 ] where Canisso stayed until his adolescence, returning to São Paulo again. Years later he returned to Brasília, where he spent most of his life. [ 7 ] One of his first contacts with music was when his sister bought a guitar and Canisso turned all the strings, making his sister very angry, and forbade him to take her guitar. [ 8 ] Canisso, from then on, only took her guitar hidden, usually when she wasn’t at home, [ 9 ] he had to go under her bed, get the box and put everything back in order so she wouldn’t get suspicious. Since he was little, he was interested in music. [ 10 ]

Canisso had a Beatles tape and was always trying to play their songs, [ 11 ] and one of the first songs he learned on the guitar was ” Day Tripper “. Later on, punk bands began to appear , including, close to his house, Digão had a rehearsal room at home, as he already had a band and played the drums , his band only rehearsed on the weekends, and during the rest of the week they They left their instruments assembled, so as not to have to take them back and forth. The three lived nearby and Digão’s house was always the meeting point for the crowd during the week. One day, just for fun, they decided to play in the band’s set and, together with him and Rodolfo, they started playing Ramones , unanimously between them, in a short time they produced several songs and from then on the seed of what would later become the Raimundos . [ 12 ] Canisso met Digão by accident, [ 13 ] Canisso studied with Digão’s brother, and one day he went to Digão’s house looking for his brother, but that day Digão’s brother was not there, and Canisso, since his brother wasn’t there, he went to talk to his brother, who was Digão, and they both had similar tastes, and they stayed talking the whole afternoon. [ 14 ] The band rehearsed without any great pretensions until close to New Year’s Eve 1988, when the opportunity arose to do a show at the house of Gabriel from Little Quail ‘s grandfather. people was Bianco, lead singer of Kratz, his group enjoyed Raimundos’ show and then invited them to play with them the following week, at Bom Demais. This little bar in Asa Norte was one of the only places that housed the city’s musicians, it had a small stage and a sound system, the vast majority were made up of MPB singers, but some nights they opened for rock bands… In that case, show Canisso meets Adriana Toscano de Vilhena, an Olympic rower who, during a break in her training, helped out as Kratz’s “roadie”, it was love at first sight, there are those who guarantee that the band Raimundos only continued after the first show so that with she impressed the cat and won her over to Canisso… Canisso’s first double bass was purchased after an accident with his Beetle – with Rodolfo in the passenger seat – which forced him to sell the remains to a scrap yard. [ 15 ]it was a Yamaha bb 300, owned by Ricardo Mahara, who years later would form Maskavo Roots . The incident years later would inspire the song ” Eu Quero Ver o Oco “. [ 16 ]

Rodolfo decided to ask Canisso to play with them, as Canisso had a bolder look, and with his arrival, the band was taken a little more seriously. The band’s first performance was held at Gabriel’s (Autoramas singer) house during New Year’s Eve 1989, with one of those present being Fred, who then became the drummer. “Rodolfo’s father used a Zenilton record to rock the barbecue”, recalls Canisso. Rodolfo is the godfather of Mike, Canisso’s son. The band, after starting in 1987, ended, and everyone went to their own corner. Canisso began studying Law at UnB and had children. Digão stopped playing drums due to hearing problems and started playing guitar. Rodolfo in turn started to sing in the band Royal Street Flesh, the band now had everyone in their place. The return took place in 1992 with an opportunity to play in a bar in Goiânia . As Digão had switched to guitar, the band began looking for a drummer, even going so far as to use an electronic drum kit. Not getting good results, they recruit Fred. The following year the band recorded a demonstration tape containing Nega Jurema, Marujo, Palhas do Coqueiro and Sanidade, then starting to promote it across the country. The band became recognized by the media and other bands, who began to invite them to play in Rio de Janeiro. They even opened shows for Camisa de Vênus and Ratos de Porão at Circo Voador, in addition to a season for Titãs. In 1994, they released their first album, titled simply as Raimundos, on the Banguela dos Titãs label.

But the album’s biggest success was the porn-erotic ballad Selim , which boosted sales of the album and made the band known throughout the country. In 1995, they returned to the studio to record Lavô Tá Novo , which was released on the Warner label . The album sells much more than the first. And this, combined with the band’s participation in the Monsters of Rock and Hollywood Rock festivals where they played alongside classic groups such as Motorhead and Iron Maiden , consolidated the name Raimundos. In 1996, with the death of Mamonas Assassinas , a large part of the band’s fans began to follow Raimundos, which increased the band’s success among children. The band even performs at Xuxa Park . That same year they launched a box with CD, comic book and VHS tape called Cesta Básica. In 1997 they went to Los Angeles to record Lapadas do Povo . The album leaves aside funny lyrics and melodies, investing in weight and more serious lyrics. Despite good reviews, the album ends up selling less than the previous ones. To make matters worse, at a show in the city of Santos , on the coast of São Paulo , one of the fences where the audience was leaving fell, causing the death of eight people and 67 injuries. The band is shaken by what happened and cancels several performances. In 1999 the band returned to success with Só no Forévis , the band’s best-selling album. The album scored several hits on radio and MTV . To crown the great phase, in 2000 the band launched, at the height of its success, together with MTV , MTV Ao Vivo , which was divided into two parts . In June 2001 , after a long conversation between the members, Raimundos announced your end. The main reason was Arante ‘s dissatisfaction . Two months later, Fred , Canisso and Digão decided to return with the band. They released the album Éramos 4 , which features songs from the band’s concert with the former Ramones drummer .

2002-2006: Leaves Raimundos, joins Rodox and other projects

In November 2002, in the middle of the Kavookavala promotion tour, Canisso left Raimundos, for reasons that were not clear at the time. [ 17 ] [ 18 ] After leaving the band, he considered starting his own project, but his return to the stage took place with Detonautas Roque Clube in January 2003, when at the time he replaced, for around two months, bassist Tchello , who had been injured. [ 19 ]

Still in 2003, in a brief period in which he was on a musical hiatus and was working as a reporter at MTV , Canisso received a call from Tico Santa Cruz , who commented to him that bassist Patrick Laplan had recently left Rodox , the band he led by his former colleague Rodolfo Abrantes. When asked by Tico if he would like to take on the position, he expressed interest, but highlighted that he had not received any invitation. Tico then mediated the contact, and a few days later Rodolfo called Canisso with the invitation. [ 20 ] Soon, in August of that year, the press started reporting that Canisso had definitively joined the group. [ 21 ] [ 22 ]

On September 13 of that year, he made his debut as bassist for Rodox at a show in Belo Horizonte, [ 23 ] on the tour to launch the band’s second studio album. [ 24 ] Canisso remained in Rodox until the group’s last show, on August 7, 2004. [ 25 ]

After the dissipation of Rodox, due to religious differences, [ 26 ] [ 27 ] still in São Paulo, Canisso even took a chance on vocals in a band that was not even named, and was composed by Johnny Monster; bassist of Daniel Beleza e os Corações em Fúria, Ulisses Torelli; guitarist for the metal band Hammer of Gods and Leandro Leospa; Rumbora drummer . [ 28 ]

Some time later Canisso returned to Brasília, where, in 2006, he ended up joining the hardcore band Quebraqueixo, [ 29 ] taking over as guitarist and also working on the group’s second album. [ 30 ] As a guitarist for Quebraqueixo, he even performed on Jornal da MTV in April 2007. [ 31 ]

2007: The return to Raimundos and the “Baú do Canisso”

In 2007, Canisso left Quebraqueixo and, coincidentally on the same day he decided to leave the band, he received an invitation from Digão to participate in two Raimundos shows. [ 29 ] In mid-June Canisso was already rehearsing with the band, which after Fred’s departure included Caio on drums. [ 32 ] In August he was appointed again as an official member of Raimundos. [ 33 ] [ 34 ] In 2008, he returned to Brazil with the band on the tour entitled “A volta do Canisso”. [ 35 ] With his return to the band, the virtual store on Raimundos’ website was renamed “Baú do Canisso”. [ 36 ]
